Exclusive: Notorious double agent Aldrich Ames is dead

He had been serving a lifetime prison sentence after being convicted of espionage, and he was 84.

Taking a quick second out of my workday to bring you some fresh intelligence — special thanks to the former counterintel agent who tipped me off.

Notorious spy Aldrich Ames, the former CIA counterintelligence who betrayed the United States for the Soviet Union, died yesterday.

Ames was convicted of espionage in 1994 and had been serving a life sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Maryland. His death is confirmed on the Bureau of Prisons website.

It is unclear how he died, but he was 84 years old. (I’m hearing it was lung cancer but that is not confirmed… one person tells me he was a chain smoker and had lung cancer previously.)

Ames compromised dozens of clandestine operations, and provided information that caused the deaths of at least 10 intelligence assets.

Watch out for the obituaries in the days ahead.
